About Xiamen Zhongshan Road
Construction began in 1925 and the route was completed in 1930, connecting the city's streets with the waterfront. Returning overseas Chinese helped build its arcades, bringing architectural influences from Southeast Asia. The covered ground-floor walkways, locally associated with the term wujiaoji, shelter pedestrians from sun and rain; arches and carved details enrich the floors above.
The 1933 Tianxian Guesthouse adds a named example of the street's Nanyang architectural character. Exhibits in the Zhongshan Road Qiaopi Museum preserve another side of those overseas connections: letters and remittances sent between migrants and their families.
