About Xinglong Mountain
The eastern Xinglong and western Qiyun mountains give the visitor area its two-sided character. The contrast between forested slopes, the intervening valley and exposed higher ground is more useful to understand than a single summit height. Plan a selected mountain route, allowing the access conditions to determine how far into the upland you continue.
Xinglong Mountain lies 45 kilometres southeast of Lanzhou in Yuzhong County, about 5 kilometres southwest of the county seat, forming part of the eastward extension of the Qilian Mountains. It runs northwest to southeast, covers an area of 280 square kilometres, and extends about 40 kilometres east to west and about 7 kilometres north to south. From east to west the range comprises seven peaks, including Wutai Mountain (五台山) and Jianzi Mountain (尖子山) as well as Xinglong and Qiyun Mountain (栖云山), of which the highest reaches an elevation of 3021 metres.
A Gansu Xinglong Mountain Nature Reserve was approved by the provincial government in 1986, and in 1988 the State Council upgraded it to the Gansu Xinglong Mountain National Nature Reserve (甘肃兴隆山国家级自然保护区). On 25 October 2002 the National Tourism Administration approved the reserve as a 4A-level tourist area (4A级旅游区).
What to look for
- The contrasting Xinglong and Qiyun ridges on either side of the valley.
- The extensive wooded slopes that distinguish this upland from the surrounding loess landscape.
The surrounding area
Riverbank walks, beef noodles and tea culture make a useful beginning or ending to a provincial route.
