About Dong'ao Island

Dong'ao Island (东澳岛) is an island of 4.663 km² in the middle of the Wanshan Archipelago (万山群岛), in the southeast of Xiangzhou District (香洲区), Zhuhai (珠海). More than 80 percent of it is forested, and it is listed as a 4A-level tourist attraction in Guangdong.

The Wanshan Archipelago lies outside the mouth of the Pearl River, south and southwest of the Hong Kong mainland and east of Macau; more than 150 of its islands, Dong'ao among them, are administered by Xiangzhou District. Most of Dong'ao's residents live in Dong'ao Village (东澳村).

The island's best-known relic is the Dong'ao Island Fort (东澳岛铳城), a Qing military post built in 1729. It held a garrison of 50 Qing soldiers against Portuguese colonial incursions and formed the first line of defence beyond Humen (虎门), a century before the Opium War. What survives is the walled gun fort itself and a beacon tower outside it; a gun battery occupies the northeast corner of the fort. Zhuhai listed the fort as a protected relic on 9 September 1987, and Guangdong added it to the provincial list in May 2010.

The island also has a customs site (海关遗址) that the Qing government set up in 1898 to take over the work of the Cheung Chau (长洲) tax station of the Kowloon customs, which had been withdrawn. Other named sights on the island are the Honeymoon Pavilion (蜜月阁), the Qiuzi Spring (求子泉, "spring for praying for a son"), the General's Stone Forest (将军石林) and a spot named Wanhai Pingbo (万海平波, "calm waves across ten thousand seas").
