About Hailing Island Dajiao Bay
Hailing Island has a land area of 133.8 square kilometres, of which the main island accounts for 103.3 square kilometres with a shoreline of 85.98 kilometres, and the pilot zone that runs it administers the single town of Zhapo. The island administration lists one national AAAAA scenic area on the island, the Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourism Area, together with two AAA-rated areas and a provincial-level tourist resort. A Yangjiang Daily account of the city's tourism routes, carried on the Yangjiang Municipal People's Government portal, describes Dajiao Bay itself as a 5A attraction combining sea swimming with holidaying, seafood and dried-seafood buying, and groups it with Shili Yintan, Zhapo fishing port and Beiluo Mijing among the places it lists on the island. Swimming and surfing at the Dajiaowan Maritime Silk Road Tourism Area are among the activities the same account describes.
The island administration records a national underwater-archaeology base on the island, and describes the local culture as a mix of Maritime Silk Road, Song-dynasty and Tanka boat-people strands. Two modern museum buildings stand on the island, backed by hills and facing Shili Yintan. More than 180,000 items or sets of artefacts have been recovered from the shipwreck known as Nanhai I, which was lifted whole inside a caisson in a project selected among China's hundred major archaeological projects of the past century. An account by the Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum, published by the provincial culture and tourism department, describes the museum as the place of the wreck's restart, chosen as the site of Guangdong's main International Museum Day event, and records that the extraction of the artefacts the ship carried is now essentially complete.
What to look for
- Sea swimming, which the Yangjiang Daily account attaches to Dajiao Bay itself, and the swimming and surfing it places at the Maritime Silk Road tourism area named after the bay.
- Shili Yintan (Ten-Mile Silver Beach), the strand the museum buildings face, listed separately from Dajiao Bay among the island's places.
- The Guangdong Maritime Silk Road Museum, which its own account on the provincial culture and tourism department's site names as the place of the Nanhai I wreck's restart.
- Zhapo, the single town the island's pilot zone administers, with its fishing port among the places the Yangjiang Daily account lists.
- The Nanhai I wreck itself, lifted whole inside a caisson, and the more than 180,000 items or sets of artefacts recovered from it.
