About Longhu Ancient Village
The district government dates the settlement's beginnings to the Song, its walling to the Ming and its height to the Qing. Inside the walls the plan follows a jiugong-bagua scheme and is laid out as three streets and six lanes. Buildings in Song, Ming and Qing styles stand alongside modern Chinese-Western hybrid work. More than a hundred ancestral halls and family temples survive, among them the Apo Ci and the Xiansheng Ci, together with named residences such as Tanhua Di, Jinshi Di, Fangbo Di, Dafu Di, Wenhan Di, Taiqing Di, Xiuyi Di and Rulin Di, and a Tianhou Gong. Chaozhou craft work runs through the buildings, including wood carving, stone carving, porcelain inlay, painted decoration and shell-lime moulding.
The village has been designated a Chinese Traditional Village and is rated a national AAA-grade tourist area. It remains an ordinary place of residence as well as a listed one, and the district government records a number of intangible-heritage skills still practised there, with dragon and lion dancing and yingge liyu among the customs performed at festival times.
