About Nanhua Temple
It is closely associated with Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, who lived and taught here. That connection makes the temple a pilgrimage site as well as a historic building complex.
The visit is best organised around the monastery’s religious purpose. Move through the principal temple spaces quietly and use the displayed interpretation to understand Huineng’s place in the Chan tradition. The shrine associated with his preserved remains is a focus of devotion, so photography and entry should follow the instructions in each hall rather than the expectations of an ordinary museum visit.
What to look for
- The monastery’s principal halls provide the setting for an active Chan Buddhist site.
- The shrine associated with Huineng is the central pilgrimage focus.
