About Qinglan Rock Potholes
The Guangdong Provincial Department of Land and Resources approved the site as a provincial geopark in August 2012, and the Ministry of Land and Resources granted it national geopark status in March 2018. The park is made up of the Qinglan-Xianglushan area and the Pingxi area, and its features include the water-erosion landforms of the Qinglan valley, the crystal-cavity granite of Xianglu Shan, Shuangjiniang Shan and volcanic domes, together with volcanic rock and geological structures. The provincial forestry administration traces all of this to a sea that covered the area two hundred million years ago and to repeated volcanic eruption and tectonic movement that lifted it into land. The park has in turn been rated a provincial nature-education base, a provincial school research-practice education base and a provincial science-popularisation base, the entry naming no designating body.
The catalogue name for this place, bingjiu, means glacial pothole, and the government pages cited here do not use it. Raoping County calls the hollows guaijiu and shijiu, and the provincial forestry administration attributes the valley's form to running water rather than ice. The county government names three things in the valley – the hollows, the caves among them and a group of waterfalls – and gives the valley a length of 8 kilometres; it also counts the site among Chaozhou's new eight scenes.
What to look for
- The rock hollows along the 8-kilometre Guaijiu Gu valley, each differing from the next in size and shape.
- The caves interleaved with them: the provincial account notes hollows inside caves and caves inside hollows.
- The group of waterfalls that the county government names as one of the valley's three features.
- The crystal-cavity granite landforms of Xianglu Shan, one of the geopark's listed geological themes.
- The nature-education trail of about 3 kilometres laid out along the valley's sightseeing footpath, taking in geological features, wetland and plant life.
