About Shenzhen Bay Park
The park is made of two phases joined end to end. The mangrove coastal ecological park at the eastern end was begun in 1999 and opened in December 2000, covering about 20.67 hectares; the Shenzhen Bay coastal leisure belt, about 108.07 hectares, followed in 2011. Together they cover roughly 128.74 hectares and are divided into 14 themed sections, from Zhongwan Yuehai Square and Haiyun Garden through Bailupo and Beiwan Lugang to Liuhuashan, the Sunrise Theatre, the tidal wetland and the sea-viewing boardwalk, all strung together by a continuous walking and cycling route. The strip runs from the Futian mangrove bird reserve in the east to Wanghai Road in the west, with Binhai Avenue behind it and the Shenzhen-Hong Kong bridge to the south.
The mangrove park exists because of a deliberate decision. Its ground is reclaimed tidal flat created when Binhai Avenue was built, and the municipal government moved the planned road line more than 200 metres north to keep it clear of the mangroves, then turned the roadbed already reclaimed to the west into the park. The bay's mudflats produce the fish, shrimp and crabs that feed cormorants and other waterbirds, and tens of thousands of migrating birds stop here between October and May, which makes the park a recognised refuelling point on the flyway. A later western extension, 6.6 kilometres from the mouth of the Zhongxin River to the Nanhai Hotel, opened on 3 July 2017 and carries the continuous waterfront further west.

- Migrating waterbirds between October and May, when tens of thousands of birds stop along this coast
- The continuous walking and cycling route linking the 14 themed sections along the shore
