About Tianma Mountain
The mountain divides by elevation: above 650 metres it opens into alpine grassland, and below 650 metres it combines secondary primeval forest, gorges, waterfalls, cluster peaks and cliffs, and streams with unusual rocks. The city government records forest cover of 85 per cent and cites a negative-air-ion count of 100,000 per cubic centimetre. The scenic area lies close to the Beijie interchanges of the Yunmao and Yangxin expressways, in the same town as Xijiang Hot Springs, itself also a national 3A scenic area.
The scenic area's home village, Wangjiang, carries its own cultural record: the city government lists the spring-ox dance, piaose floats, puppet shows, tea-picking songs and dazhao among old cultural forms still practised there. Wangjiang was formerly a Miao and Yao settlement, and the government's account records that large stretches of old village walls and residential-site remains survive there.
