About Five Finger Rock

Pingyuan County's landform survey classes Wuzhishi as Danxia and pairs it with Nantaishan at Shizheng, 645 metres, as facing sister mountains set north and south of each other. The two accounts of the site published by the county differ in how they group its scenery: the county culture, radio, tourism and sports bureau lists four headings, Danxia landform, forest ecology, human antiquities and the spectacle of the plank walkways, while the county's general survey gives three, forest ecology, Danxia landform and human antiquities. The bureau puts the planned extent of the scenic area at 13.2 square kilometres.

Among the features the bureau names are the Shilin Temple, a group of old plum trees, an old soldiers' stockade, an old battle wall and cliff-face inscriptions, alongside what it summarises as the mountain's strange rocks, clefts, vines, trees and caves. Its list of principal points also includes the high plank walkway, Guifei Valley, a cableway, the Congming Spring, Modufeng, Yixiantian and the Qingyun Road. The bureau says that from inside the high plank walkway the scenery of three provinces can be taken in at once. The scenic area was graded a national AAAA tourist area in 2015, and in 2019 was named a Guangdong outstanding study-travel destination.

What to look for

  • The high plank walkway (高空栈道), from inside which the county bureau says the scenery of three provinces is in view.
  • Shilin Temple (石林寺), which the county lists among the site's human antiquities.
  • The cliff-face inscriptions (摩崖石刻), the old soldiers' stockade and the old battle wall.
  • The group of old plum trees (古梅群), which the bureau ties to its description of the site in winter.
  • Guifei Valley (贵妃谷), the Congming Spring (聪明泉) and the Qingyun Road (青云路), among the principal points the bureau names.
