About Detian Falls
Rocks and trees divide the water into separate drops, with the curtains joining more strongly when the river carries more water. The combination of layered cascades and surrounding karst peaks makes the whole river setting as important as any single fall. Plan around the managed Chinese-side viewing route; a visit here does not by itself include entry into Vietnam.
Detian Falls is located in Detian Village (德天村), Shuolong Town (硕龙镇), Daxin County (大新县), in Chongzuo, on the border between China and Vietnam, directly adjoining Vietnam's Ban Gioc Falls (板约瀑布) on the far side. Together, Detian and Ban Gioc are described as the world's fourth-largest and Asia's largest transnational waterfall.
The waterfall's bedrock is Middle Devonian dolomitic limestone (中泥盆统白云质灰岩), a typical karst waterfall formation. It is about 120 meters wide, descends in three tiers with a combined vertical height of more than 60 meters, and is fed year-round by the Guichun River (归春河), part of the Pearl River system. In the rainy season, Detian and Ban Gioc merge into a single waterfall with a combined width of 208 meters.
In 2015, China and Vietnam agreed to jointly develop the Detian (Ban Gioc) scenic area, and in 2018 the site was rated a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区). In September 2023, a China-Vietnam cross-border tourism cooperation zone centered on the falls began trial operation.
