About Guangxi Museum
Guangxi Museum is the regional history and art museum in central Nanning, near Minzu Square. Founded in 1934, it brings together archaeological material, historic objects, documents and works of art associated with Guangxi. The full Chinese name, 广西壮族自治区博物馆, is useful because the separate Guangxi Museum of Nationalities is another institution elsewhere in the city.
The museum's collecting and research subjects include prehistoric societies, bronze culture, the ancient Ou and Luo peoples, ceramics, canals, books and painting. These themes allow a visitor to place Guangxi within both local cultural traditions and wider networks of exchange. The institution also combines conventional object displays with educational and interactive spaces; an activity area serves a different purpose from a gallery containing conserved originals.
Begin with the current exhibition map and choose a historical theme before adding a temporary show. Compare an object's material, use and find location rather than treating every bronze or ceramic as interchangeable. Check whether an interpretation uses an original, replica or reconstruction. A short focused visit to a few related galleries can communicate the region's history more clearly than rushing through every room.
