About Guanyang
Stone-paved lanes connect courtyard houses, with carved windows, wells and gardens showing the organisation of domestic life. The Xiaoyi Kefeng stone archway provides a more public display of carving, including paired dragons and other auspicious figures. A compact visit can concentrate on this one village rather than rushing between the county’s scattered attractions. Residents still use these spaces, so house interiors depend on local permission.
The county was historically known as Guanyuan County (灌源县), sited on the east bank of the Guan River (灌江) within present-day Guanyang. According to the Old Book of Tang's treatise on geography, the county was reestablished at its former walled site in the second year of the Shangyuan era (上元二年), when the Guan River was recorded as lying west of the city and the place was then called Guanyuan. The area later belonged successively to Quanzhou, Guilin prefecture and Guangxi province.
Guanyang lies in the northeast of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in the upper drainage of the Guan River, a tributary of the Xiang River, and borders Hunan province. It adjoins Quanzhou to the north, Gongcheng to the south, Xingan and Lingchuan to the west, and Daoxian and Jiangyong in Hunan to the east, with terrain higher in the south and lower in the north. The county covers 1837 square kilometers and administers three towns, six townships, 138 administrative villages, three communities and 1517 natural villages.
