About Duyun

Wenfeng Garden gathers its paths around a Qing-period stone pagoda, with the river on three sides. The nearby covered bridge and the stone-paved old street provide contrasting architectural stops. The street was remodelled in the modern period, so its grey tiles and carved windows should be enjoyed as part of today’s city rather than assumed to be an untouched Ming streetscape.

The city was originally named Duyun (都云) after a nearby cave, Duyun Cave (都云洞), noted for its misty appearance, one kilometer east of the old town. In the 23rd year of the Hongwu era (1390) of the Ming dynasty, after suppressing a local Miao uprising, the general He Fu petitioned the court that the character “云” (cloud), meaning unpredictable change, be replaced with “匀” (even, uniform); the emperor approved the change. Duyun Guard was established in 1395 and became Duyun Prefecture in 1494. In 1956 the Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture was established with Duyun as its capital, and in 1958 Duyun became a county-level city.

Duyun's urban area lies along the Jian River (剑江). Northwest of the city, Doupeng Mountain (斗篷山), a peak in the central section of the Miaoling range, is covered by a large area of primeval forest. The county's north is largely mountainous, while its central and southern parts form a narrow, elongated river-valley basin of karst terrain, with numerous underground rivers and caves.
