About Nanjiang Grand Canyon
Kaiyang County describes the gorge as running more than forty kilometres between sheer peaks, 398 m deep at its deepest, and reports a specialist survey finding it an old-stratum, deeply incised low-to-middle mountain gorge landform. The county counts more than 80 natural features in it and more than 40 waterfalls of different kinds, among them the Shexiang waterfall on the Little Nanjiang, which drops more than 150 m. It is a national AAAA-grade scenic area, and the county gives karst gorge scenery and varied waterfall groups as its two defining characteristics. As of the county's 2019 report 18.4 km of the park had been opened, with a rafting run on the river, plankways along the cliffs and shaded paths, and a crossing through karst old-growth forest.
The Guiyang municipal forestry bureau sets the gorge inside a larger designation. The Kaiyang provincial scenic and historic area occupies the south-centre of the county and consists of Xianghuoyan, the Zijiang Difeng and the Nanjiang Grand Canyon, its planned extent covering Shaoshang township, Hefeng township and Longgang town. It was established by provincial government document in 2000 and its master plan for 2001 to 2020 was approved in 2001; the Nanjiang gorge component was approved by the provincial housing and construction department in 2007. Of the area's total, which the table gives as about 80.29 square kilometres, the Nanjiang gorge accounts for 30.87.
