About Nanlong Buyi Ancient Village
The village has more than 150 Buyi-style stilt houses, of which 48 in the core area stand hidden among more than 360 old banyan trees of varied form, including a single tree grown into its own grove, a tree grown into a bridge, and a tree-root well. Local tradition also calls the settlement Baguazhai, Eight Trigrams Village: it is said to hold 148 dwellings laid out following the eight-trigram pattern, so that outsiders lose their way inside, a design said to have been meant to keep out other groups; it also has a command platform and a drill ground associated with the same tradition.
The village's architectural complex, registered under the Chinese address of groups 1, 2 and 3 of Nanlong village at the Wairan sub-district office, Bajie town, is listed by the Qianxinan prefecture's culture and tourism bureau as a provincial-level protected cultural relic unit.
