About Qingyun Road Pedestrian Street

The road was built in 1927 outside the south gate of Guiyang as a stretch of the Hunan-Guizhou road, and took its name from the two points it ran between, Qingshanpo and Tuyunguan. Guizhou Daily dates the street food to the 1980s, when 64 households in hardship set up night stalls; over more than thirty years this became a food street of more than 700 m with over a hundred traders and more than 300 stalls. In 2019 Guiyang issued a scheme for moving temporary street-occupying night-market stalls indoors, and Nanming District moved all of the Qingyun Road stalls off the carriageway. The district began a wider city-renewal project on the road and the surrounding lanes in 2021.

Yang Mei of the Nanming District party committee describes the improvement as built in three sections – an Art Qingyun section, a crossover experience section and a food-and-drink section – running 1,041 m from Zunyi Road in the west to the Memorial Tower in the east, and taking two years. The indoor market, Qingyun Shiji, opened on 11 December 2021 in the food-and-drink section: more than 60 mu converted from the old works of the Guiyang knitting factory, holding 265 shops, market stalls and boot shops. The pedestrian street itself opened on 20 January 2022. It now carries more than 500 traders, with more than 60 first-in-Guizhou stores among them, and it was named in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's fourth list of national tourism and leisure blocks.

What to look for

  • Qingyun Shiji, the covered market made out of the old Guiyang knitting factory works, with its shops set inside the retained factory buildings.
  • The Qingyun gate and the totem poles, which the district's account describes as carrying a strong old-Guiyang historical flavour under the city lights at nightfall.
  • The three sections of the 1,041 m street – Art Qingyun, crossover experience and food and drink – between Zunyi Road and the Memorial Tower.
  • The national intangible cultural heritage horsetail embroidery of Song Shuixian, among the stores brought into the block.
