About Sidonggou Waterfall Gorge
Sidonggou Waterfall Gorge (四洞沟) is a stream valley with four stepped waterfalls in Datong town (大同镇), in the west of Chishui (赤水) in northwestern Guizhou. The town lies 9 km from Chishui's city centre.
Datong town borders Xuyong (叙永) and Hejiang (合江) counties in Sichuan, and the Datong River (大同河), a tributary of the Chishui River, flows through it. Forest covers 85 percent of the town, and Chishui's government counts 54,500 mu (about 3,600 hectares) of bamboo forest within it.
The stream used to be called Min Creek (闽溪). It is known for four tiers of falls on its course, Water Curtain Cave Falls (水帘洞瀑布), Moon Pool Falls (月亮潭瀑布), Flying Frog Cliff Falls (飞蛙崖瀑布) and White Dragon Pool Falls (白龙潭瀑布), and later came to be called Sidonggou, roughly "four-cave gully". The scenic-area operator spreads the four falls, each with its own shape, over some 4 km of stream and counts close to twenty springs and brooks in the side valleys, with bamboo crowding the stream and oddly shaped rocks along it.
Chishui's government calls Sidonggou a national scenic area, and Chinese Wikipedia lists it among the Chishui scenic areas open to visitors. The operator lists it as a national 4A site. Its description of the wider area adds a natural stone bridge, Tianshengqiao (天生桥), Duxian Bridge (渡仙桥), a Qing-dynasty stone arch honouring chastity and filial piety (节孝石坊), the Huaping (华平) and Dashuigou (大水沟) falls, the rocks of Shiding Mountain (石鼎山), a sea of clouds at Fangbei (方碑) and Datong old town (大同古镇). On the old town's street stands the former site of the Chishui–Hejiang special branch of the Chinese Communist Party (中共赤合特支).
