About Xiasi Ancient Town
The town's trade in Sichuan salt, timber, tea and cloth drew merchant guilds from Huguang, Jiangxi and Fujian to settle along the river, and guild halls, schools and trading houses were built in succession. The mixing of central-plains, Jiangnan and southern-Fujian culture with local Miao, Dong and Gelao culture gave the town its Little Shanghai nickname, and different ethnic communities have lived together there for generations.
Along its streets, Hui-style horse-head gables stand next to Miao and Dong stilt houses, and the Yuwang Palace, the Guangdong Guild Hall and the Yangming Academy retain their old character amid Miao embroidery workshops, heritage-craft shops and guesthouses.
