Bo'ao 博鳌

About Bo'ao

Riverside views, the sea-facing town and the Yudai sandbar make a gentle coastal outing. The permanent conference venue is on Dongyu Island and has its own visitor arrangements. Tanmen’s fishing harbour and maritime museum are a separate nearby drive, useful for adding substance beyond conference-centre photographs.

The town covers about 31 square kilometers at the mouth of the Wanquan River (万泉河), bordering the South China Sea to the east, Wanning to the south, the Chaoyang and Shangyong townships of Qionghai to the west, and Tanmen town to the north.

It is described as a market town of mixed fishing and farming (半渔半农集镇). Dongyu Island (东屿岛), site of the forum's permanent venue, is Bo'ao's largest island. The town was named one of China's Top 100 Cultural Towns (中国文化百强镇) in 2019, and again, in the second edition, in 2023.
