About Wanning
Wancheng is the urban centre near Dongshan Ridge; Xinglong adds coffee and tropical botanical collections; Riyue Bay is focused on surfing; Shimei Bay and Shenzhou Peninsula favour beach stays. Their variety is the reason to linger, but they are not one walkable resort. Choose an accommodation base around your main interest, then add one neighbouring cluster per outing rather than repeatedly crossing the municipality.
Wanning received its current name in 1117 or 1122, when it was renamed from Wan'an County (万安县). It reverted to the name Wan'an in 1143, before being changed to Wanzhou (万州) in 1370; the present name was restored after the Communist takeover in the 1950s.
The county was promoted to a city on 5 August 1996. The name Wanning also appears as Van Neing or Ban Neing in the local Hainamese dialect. It denotes both the county seat and the wider county-level city as a whole, which as of 2006 had an estimated population of 65,871.
