About Cangzhou Museum

Its galleries connect local archaeology with the Grand Canal, coastal resources, Wuqiao acrobatics and martial traditions. The building's layered, inverted-container shape recalls old city walls, while a central relief introduces objects and episodes that reappear in the collections. A focused visit can begin with regional history, continue through canal culture, and finish with the acrobatic props that make the area's performance heritage tangible.

The museum opened on 1 January 2003 in Cangzhou's culture and art center, reorganized from the former Cangzhou Exhibition Hall, and was designated a first-batch national third-grade museum in May 2009. A new building west of Jilin Avenue (吉林大道), funded by the municipal government at a cost of about 300 million yuan, began construction in 2010 and opened free to the public on 11 June 2014; it was redesignated a national second-grade museum in September 2018.

The new building, designed by the Southeast University Design Institute, covers a total floor area of 32,275 square meters on a 57-mu (亩) site, with 24,820 square meters of exhibition space. Its inverted, layered shape recalls the old city walls, and its layout follows a traditional nine-square-grid plan, with the central unit removed to form an atrium and courtyard. It has one basement level and four floors above ground, reaching a height of 25.7 meters.

The museum is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and is described as the largest city-level museum by exhibition scale in North China. Its collection grew from more than 7,000 items and sets in 2014 to 18,404 items and sets by 2024, including 227 designated precious relics as of 2023.
