About Zhangshiyan Cliffs
Zhangshiyan in Zanhuang County is the namesake of a distinctive sandstone landform in the Taihang Mountains. Long red cliff bands rise above green slopes and narrow valleys. The continuous walls of rock give this landscape a character that is especially clear when seen across a valley.
The scenic area includes Jiunü Peak, Zhihutao, Yuantong Temple and Donglingbei sections. Its celebrated echo-wall formation follows a large curving cliff, while other routes reveal layered escarpments and wooded gullies. The municipal and provincial descriptions identify the relationship between broad cliff faces and the paths that thread through the valleys below.
A useful visit alternates distant viewpoints with closer observation of the rock bands. This makes the scale of the escarpments easier to appreciate than a string of isolated photo stops. Seasonal vegetation can change the colour contrast strongly, while cloud and mist may hide the very cliffs that define the area.
What to look for
- Look across the valley for the long horizontal bands of red sandstone.
- Read the terrain around the curved echo-wall section from a permitted viewpoint.
- Compare wooded gullies with the steep cliff faces above them.
