About Jiayin Dinosaur National Geopark
Jiayin Dinosaur National Geopark is a palaeontological destination in northern Heilongjiang, associated with the fossil-bearing area of Longgushan. Its importance comes from dinosaur discoveries and the study of the rocks containing them. The Shenzhou Dinosaur Museum provides an indoor introduction within the geopark.
Museum displays include hadrosaur material, with skeletons illustrating differences between adult and younger animals. These exhibits help connect individual bones with the larger anatomy of a dinosaur. Fossils discovered in the Jiayin area are also held by other institutions, including the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum, so an image of a Jiayin find does not by itself identify where that specimen is displayed today.
Start with the museum’s explanation of the fossil locality, then compare a mounted skeleton with labels identifying original fossil material and reconstructed elements. Geological interpretation adds the missing setting: the surrounding rocks and the history of discovery explain why this particular place became known for dinosaurs. Outdoor models serve an educational purpose and should be distinguished from excavated remains.
What to look for
- Connect the museum displays with the Longgushan fossil locality.
- Compare hadrosaur skeletons and their labelled elements.
- Distinguish fossils, reconstructions and outdoor models.
