About Saint Sophia
The present church was completed in 1932, replacing an earlier wooden building. Its cross-shaped plan, central dome and smaller tent-like roofs combine Orthodox church forms with Russian architectural traditions. The surrounding square lets you study the building from several angles; the restored interior has served as an architectural and cultural venue rather than an ordinary parish church.
The original wooden church was built in March 1907, shortly after the Trans-Siberian Railway's completion in 1903 connected Vladivostok to northeastern China. Russia's No. 4 Army Division, stationed in the area following its defeat in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), had the church built as an imposing spiritual symbol intended to restore the soldiers' confidence. By 1921 Harbin's population had reached 300,000, including 100,000 Russians. Starting in September 1923, when a ceremony marked the laying of a new cornerstone, the church was expanded and rebuilt, a project completed in November 1932 after nine years.
Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Christian missionary work ended and treaties between the Soviet and Chinese governments provided for Russian churches to be transferred to Chinese control. The cathedral was closed from the Great Leap Forward (1958-1961) through the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).
The church stands at the corner of Toulong Street and Zhaolin Street, reaching 53.3 meters (175 feet) in height and covering an area of 721 square meters (0.178 acres). Built in the Russian Revival style, it was modeled on the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. The cross-shaped main structure is topped by a large green-tipped dome. According to municipal and district archives, Fotiy Huo Desheng served as the church's ninth rector.
