About Boshan Lake
The Henan water resources department counts Boshan among the fourteen large reservoirs built inside the province within the Huai River basin. It sits on the Zhentou River, which is the largest tributary of the Ru: the Zhentou rises at Jiguan Mountain in Queshan County above the reservoir, runs as a hill-country river for 121 kilometres over a catchment of 1,840 square kilometres, and continues downstream into the Suyahu Reservoir in Runan County. The Ru itself belongs to the Hong-Ru system on the left bank of the upper Huai. The lake is known locally as the Lijiang of the Central Plains, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs included it in the first group of sites it designated as national leisure-fishery demonstration bases. The shore area at Rendian Town, with hills at its back and the water in front, combines fish farming with visitor facilities.
What to look for
- The open water of the reservoir itself, impounded on the Zhentou River, the Ru's largest tributary
- The hill country of the upper Zhentou around Jiguan Mountain, the river's source above the reservoir
- The shoreline at Rendian Town, where the hills come down to the lake
