About Chancellor Cao's Mansion
The halls are a modern reconstruction in Han style rather than surviving ancient fabric, and the district government describes the site as the first themed attraction in China devoted wholly to Cao Wei culture. The enclosure occupies 18 mu; counted together with the adjoining Weiwudi park and commercial street the site covers about 30,000 square metres with some 8,000 square metres of floor space, built at a cost of 230 million yuan. The entrance hall is the restored Xuzhou prefectural yamen, which uses photographs, charts and objects to set out Xuchang's history before it became a seat of government.
Beyond it, three successive courtyards carry the three main halls. The Qiuxian Tang is given over to Cao Cao's search for capable men, with relief sculpture inside and a large screen wall outside carved with his poem 'Viewing the Blue Sea'. The Dezheng Ting presents his political, economic and military record, with silicone figures of Cao Cao and his officials and generals. The three-storey Jian'an Ge is literary: the first floor covers the writing of Cao Cao and his three sons, the second Jian'an literature and the Seven Masters of Jian'an, the third celebrated women of the Three Kingdoms period. Alongside sculpture and text the displays use wood pyrography, opera masks, digital media and three-dimensional imagery.
