About Guanshan Geopark

The park is classified as a landform geopark, and what it protects is the record of a mountainside that has broken apart. Its defining features are a forest of freestanding stone pillars, the Red Stone Gorge, and a narrow cleft known as 'one line of sky', set among waterfalls, springs and clear pools. Collapse and rock fissuring are named as the processes that shaped it, rather than water erosion alone.

Guanshan is also biologically rich. Within the scenic area lies a national macaque nature reserve of 13,000 hectares. The county government records around thirty mammal species there, including leopard, wild boar and deer, more than a hundred bird species including golden eagle, and over 1,500 plant species; it singles out the Taihang macaque and the Guanshan snow lotus as especially rare. The area is one of five scenic areas grouped into the Xinxiang South Taihang resort district, alongside Baligou, Tianjieshan and Jiulianshan, Wanxian Shan, Qiugou and Qiwangzhai.
