About Yellow River Cultural Park
The park is designated a national scenic area, the Zhengzhou Yellow River national geopark and a national water conservancy scenic area. It backs onto Mount Yue and looks north across the river at the precise point where the middle course of the Yellow River gives way to the lower course and where the channel, raised by its own silt, becomes what is called a suspended river. More than twenty square kilometres are open, organised as five areas named Wulongfeng, Yueshan Temple, Dayu Mountain, the Yan and Huang Emperors Statue and Xinghai Lake, with more than forty named features distributed among them.
The best known of these is the pair of colossal heads of the Yan and Huang emperors, 106 metres high, built into the hillside using a combination of sculpture and architectural construction and facing the river; a stele below carries the 485-character Yanhuang Fu in Fan Zeng's hand, 33 metres long and 3.3 metres high. Beside Yanhuang Square a sculpture group presents 117 historical figures, from Yao, Shun and Yu to Confucius, grouped under five themes. Elsewhere in the park the Yellow River Stele Forest has cut more than 4,000 pieces of calligraphy from China and abroad into stone, and the geological museum of the geopark uses loess cave-style halls over 5,892 square metres, of which 4,114 are exhibition space.
