About Shangqiu Ancient City
A square inner city sits within a surrounding water and outer-enclosure system.
Earlier settlements and city sites overlap or adjoin the surviving Ming- and Qing-period core. This layered urban history is one of the main reasons to explore its walls and street plan.
City sites in the Shangqiu area were repeatedly relocated and rebuilt because of Yellow River flooding. The existing prefectural city, damaged by flooding in the fifteenth year of the Hongzhi era (弘治) (1502), was moved to higher ground, and a new walled city was completed by the sixth year of the Zhengde era (正德) (1511). In the twenty-fourth year of the Jiajing era (嘉靖) (1545), Guide subprefecture was raised to Guide Prefecture (归德府), and the new city became the seat of both the prefecture and Shangqiu County.
The city remained the prefectural and county seat through the Qing dynasty; after Guide Prefecture was abolished under the Republic of China it continued as the seat of Shangqiu County, with county-level offices and most public facilities concentrated there until the county was dissolved in 1997.
The old county was listed among the second batch of National Historic and Cultural Cities (国家历史文化名城) in 1986, with the protection zone covering the ancient city and its surrounding remains, and the Guide Prefecture city wall was listed as a Ming-dynasty structure among the fourth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 1996. A 2016 ordinance, the Shangqiu Ancient City Protection Regulations (商丘古城保护条例), extended planning control to the Song-state city ruins (宋国故城遗址), the Eboetai platform (阏伯台) and Baguanzhai (八关斋).
