About Zhugou Revolutionary Memorial Hall

Zhugou Revolutionary Memorial Hall (竹沟革命纪念馆) occupies the former site of the Communist Party's Central Plains Bureau (中共中央中原局旧址) on Yan'an Street in Zhugou (竹沟镇), a town 30 km west of the Queshan County (确山县) seat in Zhumadian (驻马店), Henan.

Zhugou is listed as a China Historical and Cultural Town (中国历史文化名镇). Late in September 1938 Peng Xuefeng (彭雪枫) started the newspaper Fuxiao Bao (拂晓报, "Dawn News") here. In the autumn of that year the Communist Party abolished its Yangtze Bureau and set up the Central Plains Bureau in Zhugou, with Liu Shaoqi (刘少奇) as secretary, to direct its work north of the Yangtze in Hubei, Henan, Anhui and Jiangsu. That role earned the town the nickname "Little Yan'an" (小延安).

The memorial hall was founded in 1956, and its name was written by Zhou Enlai (周恩来). In 1988 the State Council placed the bureau site, dated to 1938-1939, in the third batch of national key cultural relics protection units (全国重点文物保护单位), in the class of revolutionary sites and memorial buildings.

The exhibition has six parts. They start with early revolutionary activity and the building of a base in the Tongbai Mountains (桐柏山) of southern Henan. Later parts present Zhugou as the leadership centre of Henan's war of resistance and a strategic support point of the war of resistance in the Central Plains, then the Zhugou Massacre (竹沟惨案) and the final victory. It shows more than 400 objects, four painted scenes and four large sculptures. The town also has the Zhugou Martyrs' Cemetery (竹沟烈士陵园), and Zhugou village was named one of China's traditional villages in August 2013.
