About Mai Po Nature Reserve Guided Visit
Mai Po Nature Reserve protects a wetland landscape beside Inner Deep Bay in the northwestern New Territories. Traditional shrimp ponds, reedbeds, mangroves and intertidal mudflats support waterbirds and other wildlife. A guided visit introduces how these habitats function together, rather than offering an unrestricted walk through every part of the reserve.
WWF-Hong Kong has managed Mai Po since 1983, and Mai Po with the Inner Deep Bay wetlands received Ramsar recognition in 1995. The gei wai shrimp ponds are particularly useful for understanding the relationship between traditional water management and conservation. Birdwatching hides and designated paths allow observation while limiting disturbance to feeding and resting wildlife.
