About Pottinger Street and Hollywood Road
Pottinger Street is a steep stone-paved street linking different levels of Central, with the upper section reaching Hollywood Road. Its Chinese nickname, Stone Slab Street, describes the uneven paving that makes the route distinctive. The slope is a useful reminder that this part of Hong Kong developed around difficult hillside terrain.
Dating from the nineteenth century, the street was designed to support movement and drainage along a steep route. Its stalls have changed with local commerce, from household goods and practical services towards seasonal decorations and other retail. The nearby Hollywood Road setting adds further opportunities to compare older street patterns with contemporary shops.
Look closely at the arrangement of the stones before concentrating on storefronts. Their ridges and changes in level are part of the street’s working design. From a safe stopping place, compare the uphill and downhill views: the same narrow route can appear quite different in each direction. Keep entrances and the walking line clear while browsing or taking pictures.
