About Hong Kong Film Archive
The Hong Kong Film Archive in Sai Wan Ho preserves the city’s cinema history through films and related material. Its waterfront building houses a cinema, exhibition hall and resource centre alongside collection storage and restoration facilities. It offers a more focused encounter with filmmaking than a general sightseeing display of famous actors.
The archive collects, catalogues and conserves films, posters, photographs and publications, while presenting retrospectives, exhibitions and research. Screenings can make that work tangible: a restored print is both a film to enjoy and evidence of the care needed to keep older cinema available. Conservation laboratories and storage areas are working facilities, not ordinary public galleries.
Choose a programme or exhibition that interests you before arriving. In the displays, compare publicity material with the film’s production and social setting; a poster shows how a work was presented to its audience. Allow a separate block of time for a screening rather than treating it as a short gallery stop.
