About Lai Chi Chong Geosite
Lai Chi Chong lies on the southeastern shore of Tolo Channel in Sai Kung West Country Park. Its coast exposes a varied record of volcanic activity and sediment deposited in water. The attraction is the structure of the rocks along the shore, rather than a single unusual boulder. Lai Chi Chong is distinct from Lai Chi Wo village farther northeast.
The geopark describes volcaniclastic sedimentary rock formed when volcanic ash mixed with silt and other material in a lake. Subsequent geological processes produced layered rocks with characteristics of both volcanic and sedimentary origins. Folds and other structures make the shore useful for comparing how deposits were laid down and later deformed.
Look first for changes in the direction and thickness of the layers, then compare neighbouring exposures instead of collecting samples. Some of the most revealing surfaces are exposed only at lower tide. A guided visit or the geopark’s interpretation can help separate a visible observation from a geological explanation that needs specialist knowledge.
What to look for
- Compare layered rocks, folds and contrasting textures.
- Use tide conditions to decide which shore views are accessible.
