About Dahong Mountain

Dahong Mountain (大洪山) is a mountain range on the shared border of Jingmen (荆门), Xiangyang (襄阳), Xiaogan (孝感) and Suizhou (随州) in Hubei, where Suizhou meets Jingshan (京山) and Zhongxiang (钟祥); Sui County (随县) lies on its northeastern side.

The range is also called Lulin Mountain (绿林山), after the Lulin Army (绿林军), which originated in these hills at the end of the Western Han. Sui County's government names Baozhu Peak (宝珠峰) on Dahong Mountain, at 1,055 m, as the highest point in the southwest of the county, and local tourism promotes the mountain as "the first peak in the sky of northern Chu" (楚北天空第一峰).

Forest covers more than 90 percent of the Dahong Mountain area. Its landscape includes karst caves, four large upland pools known as "heavenly pools", highland lakes, extensive tea gardens and very old ginkgo trees scattered through the villages.

Youji Chan Temple (幽济禅寺), a Buddhist temple on the mountain, was moved away in the Southern Song. In the Duanping era (1234-1236) the regional commander Meng Gong (孟珙), guarding against Jin invasion, petitioned Emperor Lizong, and an imperial edict moved the temple to Wuchang (武昌), where the hill Dongshan was renamed Hongshan (洪山); the temple there is now Baotong Temple (宝通寺) in Wuhan.

On the Sui County side, Dahongshan Reservoir (大洪山水库), also called Pipazui Reservoir (琵琶咀水库), was built in Hongshan town (洪山镇) between 1965 and 1967. The Pipa Lake scenic area (琵琶湖景区) in the same town has about 10,400 mu of water. Its boat tours pass cliffs of clastic sedimentary rock that resemble a Danxia landform, and rocks the county presents as relics of volcanic eruptions in the late Cambrian, about 500 million years ago.
