About Daoguanhe Scenic Area
Daoguanhe Scenic Area (道观河) is a lake-and-hills scenic area in eastern Xinzhou District (新洲区), Wuhan (武汉), 68 km from the city's urban area, where the plain gives way to hill country on the border with Huanggang (黄冈).
The Xinzhou District government describes the area as 72 hills and one large lake. Its core is Daoguanhe Reservoir (道观河水库), a flood-control reservoir from 1956 that was later remade as the heart of the scenic area; its water covers about 5 km². A museum of unusual stones, the Zhonghua Qishi Guan (中华奇石馆, Chinese Rare Stones Museum), stands in the lake.
The district describes Daoguanhe as a Chan (Zen) Buddhist retreat as well as a landscape. Baoen Chan Temple (报恩禅寺) faces the water and is credited to the Chan master Benhuan (本焕), who was born in 1907 in what is now Xinzhou District and in 1930 became a monk at a Baoen Temple in Xinzhou. The temple keeps a large Buddha image brought from Myanmar, promoted as the foremost reclining Buddha of Jingchu (荆楚). The district also lists a Ten Thousand Buddha Pagoda (万佛宝塔) and Tongchan Lake (通禅湖) among the sights.
Another temple is recorded here: the Qing official Hong Liangpin (洪良品), a native of what is now Xinzhou who gained the jinshi (进士) degree in 1868, studied as a young man at Zixia Temple (紫霞寺) at Daoguanhe. A 17 km road runs from the north side of the scenic area to Jiangjun Mountain (将军山), a Dabie Mountains peak of 695 m that the district calls "Wuhan's first mountain" (武汉第一山).
