About Huangma Uprising and Hubei-Henan-Anhui Soviet Memorial Park

Work began in 1956, when the Hong'an county authorities decided – with provincial approval and Dong Biwu's personal backing – to build a martyrs' shrine; construction started in 1957 and finished the following year. From 1974 the grounds grew southward to northward with a gate tower, the monument, an ossuary for Red Army martyrs and the generals' cemetery, the Dong Biwu Memorial Hall on the east side and the martyrs' hall and Li Xiannian Memorial Hall on the west. A rebuilding and enlargement programme was substantially complete on 13 November 2007, the eightieth anniversary of the uprising, and in June 2010 the site was renamed from a martyrs' cemetery to a memorial park.

Its layout is summarised locally as 'one monument, two squares, two cemeteries and five halls'. The monument to the martyrs of the Huangma Uprising and the Eyuwan Soviet area stands above its own square, with a second square for the fallen; the two burial grounds are the generals' cemetery and the Red Army cemetery; and the five exhibition buildings are the revolutionary history memorial hall, the martyrs' memorial hall, the Dong Biwu Memorial Hall, the Li Xiannian Memorial Hall and the Hong'an Generals Hall. The site is a national key protected unit for martyrs' memorial structures under the Ministry of Civil Affairs, one of the first national patriotic education bases named by the Central Propaganda Department, and a national defence education base.
