About Mochou Village

The village is modern construction, not surviving historic fabric. It contains about 40,000 square metres of courtyard and street buildings put up in revivalist Ming, Qing and Republican-era styles, together with roughly 80,000 square metres of a newly created rural Chu-style building group. The lanes are given different characters: Washi Street is the busy commercial one, Wenyi Street the quieter arts lane. It is operated as a composite destination combining sightseeing, folk-culture experience, dining, rural-produce retail, performance, leisure and family study visits.

The name comes from Mochou Nu, a singer and dancer of the state of Chu whom local tradition places here, and the same name attaches to the lake immediately south. The village keeps a dedicated performance ground, the Huoshen Tai, where a water stage was being built in September 2025, and its resident programme draws on Jingchu traditions including nuo masked dance and datiehua, the craft of throwing molten iron to make sparks. Zhongxiang is known as a longevity town, and a longevity-themed post office called Shoupinji was set up at the village with Zhongxiang Post to show local produce and crafts.
