About Mandarin Duck Stream
The stream rises at Bailong Pool on the summit of Dahong Shan and gathers spring water from the Lulin hills, running 6.7 kilometres between steep ridges through thick vegetation. Its epithet in local usage, the winding Yuanyangxi and the ten-li water gallery, refers to its meandering course.
Yuanyangxi is one part of a much larger area. The Lulinshan scenic area covers more than 120 square kilometres, is rated a national 4A tourist area, and is designated a provincial geopark and a provincial forest park; its operator records that the State Council approved it as a national scenic and historic area in 1988. The name Lulin, meaning green forest, comes from the Lulin uprising, described as the second great peasant rebellion in Chinese history, and the area is recorded as the base from which Liu Xiu, the founder of the Eastern Han, rose. Its other sections are Meirengu, the old fortress of Lulin Zhai, Kongshan Cave, Tongtian Gorge and a hilltop campsite.
