About Furong Town
The town was called Wangcun until it took the name of the film shot here, and earlier still it was Youyang, the seat of a Han-dynasty county. Its position on the You river made it an important trading wharf, and it counts as one of the four famous old towns of Xiangxi. In 910 a Tusi chieftain established his capital here, and later Tusi rulers kept it as a summer residence, so the settlement combines a river-port history with a long association with the Tusi chieftaincies of western Hunan.
The waterfall is made by the Yingpan stream, which runs down from Lianhua cave, finds no further passage at the town and drops from the cliff in stages onto the bed of the You river. The falls are shorter than they once were: the Fengtan hydroelectric station downstream raised the river level, drowning the old wharf and a long stretch of the flagstone path and cutting the height of the final drop.
The main thoroughfare is the five-li flagstone street, which begins at Wulipai and its Taiping bridge and descends towards the river between Tujia stilt houses built up the slope. The Tongzhu garden holds a sculpture group showing the Chu king and the local Tu king concluding the Xizhou bronze pillar treaty, the settlement that ended their war. Beside the Xizhou Tusi square stands the Baishou hall, the building in which the Tujia perform their baishou dance.
