About Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town

The town grew as a river transhipment point for tung oil, timber, white wax and opium moving between Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan, and it became the economic, cultural and religious centre of south-western Hunan. Local accounts trace its origin to the Spring and Autumn period, its formation to the Tang and its height to the Ming and Qing. What survives covers 1.8 square kilometres with close to 300,000 square metres of built floor area: temples, guild halls, money shops, oil traders, workshops, inns, theatres and newspaper offices. It is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level and a national AAAA-level tourist area.

The buildings are shown as working commercial premises rather than houses, and most carry a founding date. The Suzhou guild hall dates from 1644 and was funded by Suzhou merchants trading here; the garrison office dates from 1728; the Shengfeng money shop from 1855, one of the larger of the town's 23 money shops; the Fuquantang pharmacy from 1872; the Xu Fulong trading house from 1873; and the Hongjiang newspaper office from 1925, the earliest of eighteen local papers. Note that Hongjiang District and Hongjiang City are separate administrative units in Huaihua; this site is in the District.
