About Xuanzhou Ancient Town
Xuanzhou Ancient Town (萱洲古镇) is a historic river town in Hengshan County (衡山县), Hunan (湖南). It lies in the Xuanzhou (萱洲) area, where hills stand to the west and the Xiang River (湘江) runs along the eastern side.
The settlement grew around ferry landings used by passing boats. Water transport and convenient overland routes brought merchants together here, giving the old town its trading role. The county's description identifies Ming- and Qing-period streets and old Xiang River crossings among the historical remains of the Xuanzhou area.
The surrounding area also contains old kilns, temples and historic tombs. Hengshan County's tourism route lists the ancient town separately from Xuanzhou National Wetland Park (萱洲国家湿地公园), making them distinct stops. Regional produce includes red crisp peaches, March plums and Shatian pomelos; the county identifies the red peaches as a geographical-indication agricultural product.
