About Zhou Dunyi's Hometown

The village lies about eight kilometres from the county town, strung in a band along a hillside, with the Lian stream running through the plain in front of it, Longshan on its right and Zhiling on its left. Zhou Dunyi took his style name Lianxi from this stream, and the phrase Lianxi Guli, the home place of Lianxi, is how the village is normally described. It also carries a national AAAA tourist-area rating.

Near the former residence stands the Lianxi Academy, built to commemorate Zhou Dunyi and combining study, teaching, sacrifice and library functions. It is an axially symmetric complex of successive courtyards in imitation Song style, with fabric from the Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing and Republican periods and more than twenty structures, among them the Zhuangyuan Bridge, the bell and drum towers, the Ailian Pavilion and the Qingfeng Tower. About seven kilometres away, on the eastern foot of the Dupang range, is Yueyan, a large limestone cave named for its half-moon shape; it preserves 58 rock inscriptions and is separately listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level in the seventh batch. A small hollow there is said by tradition to be where the young Zhou Dunyi studied, and the stone hollow and stone bed survive.
