About Asihatu Stone Formations
The rock is cut by near-vertical and near-horizontal joints. These intersecting fractures help explain the formations' divided, layered appearance, with columns, walls, overhangs and narrow passages producing a range of shapes rather than a uniform field of pinnacles.
The surrounding vegetation is part of the scene: mountain grassland meets woodland around the stone formations. Summer greenery and autumn foliage change the contrast between the exposed granite and its setting, while the rock shapes remain the central feature.
What to look for
- Granite columns and wall-like formations crossed by horizontal joints.
- Rock shelters, fissures and narrow passages between the formations.
- The mountain meadow and woodland surrounding the stone array.
