About Xilinhot Pingding Mountain

Seen from a distance, the hills appear to have level tops cut sharply against the sky. Closer views reveal exposed volcanic rock and sparse vegetation. Grassland lies to the north and scattered woodland to the south, placing the rock formations between two different vegetation settings.

The changing light is a notable part of the scene: the hills take on red tones towards sunset, a view locally called Pingtai Luori, or sunset over the plateau.
