About Jichang Garden
Ponds, rockeries and mature planting connect the garden with the surrounding hill setting.
Bingli Hall and Jiashu Hall represent different parts of the restored architectural ensemble. The garden influenced imperial garden designs in Beijing, but its own composition is best read through the changing relationship between water, stone and buildings. Follow the current garden route and distinguish restored structures from earlier surviving elements.
The garden began in the Yuan dynasty as monks' quarters attached to Huishan Temple. In the Ming Zhengde era, Qin Jin (秦金), a former Minister of War in Nanjing, bought the site and built it into a villa, Fenggu Xingwo (凤谷行窝). After Qin Yao (秦耀) was forced from office in 1591, he renamed it Jichang Garden. In the early Qing it passed to Qin Dezao (秦德藻), who engaged the garden designers Zhang Lian (张涟) and Zhang Shi (张轼) to rebuild it with reshaped rockeries and dredged springs, and the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors each visited six times on their southern tours.
The garden was later confiscated after a Qin family member was implicated in a court dispute in the Yongzheng era, then returned and restored with 3,000 taels of silver after his son placed third in the imperial examinations. Much of it burned during warfare in the Xianfeng and Tongzhi eras, and the Qin family donated the garden to the state in 1952 for protective restoration. It covers 14.85 mu (亩) and is laid out as a hillside villa centered on a pond, Jinhuiyi (锦汇漪), with rockeries to the west and north linking it to Huishan's slopes.
