About The Couple's Garden Retreat
This paired layout explains the name as well as the garden’s spatial character.
The eastern garden centres on a yellow-stone rockery, while the western garden uses Taihu-style rocks. Move through the residential axis before comparing the two stone landscapes. The difference in rock material and composition is more revealing than treating both gardens as interchangeable courtyard scenery.
The garden originated in the Yongzheng era (1723-1735) of the Qing dynasty, when the retired official Lu Jin (陆锦) built a residence here named She Yuan (涉园), a name taken from Tao Yuanming's 'Return to the Fields.' In the Tongzhi era, Hunan provincial judge Shen Bingcheng (沈秉成) retired because of illness and, with the painter Gu Yun (顾沄), enlarged She Yuan into the present Couple's Garden Retreat, which covers 0.8 hectares within the historic protection area of Pingjiang in old Suzhou.
The garden was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou in 2000 and listed as a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位) in 2001. Of its three parts, the east garden is considered to have the finest scenery.
What to look for
- A central residence separates the eastern and western gardens.
- The east’s yellow-stone rockery contrasts with the western garden’s lake rocks.
The surrounding area
A provincial city base for classical gardens, canals and soup-noodle breakfasts; do not confuse its old city with the distant North railway station.
