About Changzhou Tianning Temple
The temple's long history includes repeated rebuilding. Work beginning in 1896 reconstructed the Mahavira Hall and other principal halls, followed by extensive restoration in the 1980s. Its stone carvings of arhats also span different periods: the series began in 1798 and was supplemented in 1890.
Tianning Pagoda adds a modern vertical landmark to this older religious setting. Construction began in 2002 and the tower was completed in April 2007, so the pagoda and the temple's early foundation belong to very different phases of the site's history.
