About Tiansheng Bridge
The canal was cut in the early Ming period to connect the Qinhuai River with Shijiu Lake and help carry grain towards Nanjing. Workers dealt with hard rock by heating it and then cooling it sharply with water, breaking the stone for excavation.
The bridge took shape when the excavators hollowed out rock below a particularly high, hard section and left the upper part spanning the channel. Its name, 'Heaven-born Bridge', belongs to a landscape shaped jointly by the original rock and human engineering. Reddish walls lining the canal make the depth of that cutting especially clear.
